What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing
-
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) helps people heal from symptoms of unresolved trauma that got stuck in the body causing physical and emotional pain and struggle. Memories that are stuck in our short term memory can cause flashbacks, and very uncomfortable thoughts and sensations in the body. EMDR targets both the body and mind to heal the whole person.
EMDR uses both sides of the brain and body to heal and create understanding so you don’t have such a negative response to your trauma and negative beliefs . It uses bilateral stimulation through eye movements or tapping to reprocess these negative events and beliefs that have been stuck in your nervous system. Finally, you can feel some relief!
-
During your first 2 sessions, we will go over issues that you are struggling with and your goals for therapy. Together, we will make a target sequence plan that identifies events in your life that have caused struggles. We will start from the present day and work backwards to your childhood. Once we have a solid plan we will begin reprocessing and RELIEF COMES NEXT!

EMDR will help you have less of an emotional response to traumatic events that have happened to you. It can help change negative beliefs into positive and will teach you how to listen to your body and what it’s telling you.

With EMDR, we will focus on the event and the feelings connected to it. You will have skills that I teach before we do that so you feel more prepared and more in control. I will keep the reprocessing at your pace so if you say stop that’s what we do. You will be in control.

Everyone is different. If it is a single event it can be reprocessed faster and might only need 8-10 sessions. A lot of us have more than just one traumatic event which can make the reprocessing longer.
