What is trauma?
It’s a physiological and emotional response to a very bad and stressful event or set of events that exceeds a person’s ability to cope. Trauma can be inflicted by natural disasters, accidents, physical or emotional abuse, violence, or a sudden loss of a loved one. It can have profound and lasting effects on a person’s mental, emotional and physical well-being. Everyone responds differently to trauma. Some may experience immediate and severe symptoms and other won’t notice the effects until much later. Either way it’s very important to seek professional help to learn how to cope with trauma in a healthy way.
Trauma affects us in so many different ways.
It can make you feel shame, anxiety, physical pain, depression, guilt and numbness. Trauma can make you feel so disconnected from your body that you can't feel the pain from the trauma BUT you’re also noticing that you can’t feel happiness, pleasure or excitement either. You’re noticing that you’re constantly on auto pilot and can’t remember how you got from one place to the next. You may feel startled at the littlest things, or all of the sudden you’re feeling anxiety in your chest and you don’t know what to do with it
